Noel Gallagher High Flying Birds Road Back To Reunion
Noel Gallagher built High Flying Birds after Oasis split in 2009, and four albums later the project still shapes what fans expect from Live 27.
Noel Gallagher left Oasis in August 2009, and he needed a new vehicle for his songs. He built that vehicle as Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, and the project kept him writing through the solo years.
For context, our split story covers the 2009 break in full. Our solo years guide tracks the road back to the reunion. Our band history sets the solo years in context.
A songwriter starts again
First, Noel Gallagher had served as the main songwriter for Oasis, and he also played lead guitar for the band. He sang lead vocals on some Oasis songs too, so fronting a band was not a new skill for him.
Next, he formed High Flying Birds in 2010 as his solo project, and the band took his name as its banner. The project gave him full control of the writing, and it let him work outside the Oasis name.
Meanwhile, Liam Gallagher formed Beady Eye with other former Oasis members, so the brothers took separate paths. Fans compared the two projects at every step, and the comparison ran for years.
The debut album lands at number one
Then Noel Gallagher announced his debut solo album at a London press conference in July 2011. He released the single The Death of You and Me in August 2011, and the album followed soon after.
The self titled album arrived on 17 October 2011, and it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. It sold 122,530 copies in its first week, and it earned platinum certification in November 2011.
In addition, the debut showed a wider range than late Oasis records had shown. It mixed ballads with brass and dance rhythms, and critics noted the freer sound at once.
Three number ones in a row
Next, the second album Chasing Yesterday arrived in 2015, and it also reached number one in the UK. Its lead single In the Heat of the Moment reached number 26 on the UK singles chart.
Then Who Built the Moon arrived in November 2017, and it became the third straight number one studio album. The record pushed further into psychedelic and dance sounds, and it kept Noel Gallagher on large stages.
Meanwhile, the band toured the albums widely, and Noel Gallagher fronted each tour himself. The solo tours kept his voice and his songs in front of live crowds through the split years.

A hits collection and a fourth album
First, the compilation Back the Way We Came Vol 1 arrived in June 2021, and it also reached number one in the UK. The Official Charts count it among his chart topping albums under the solo name.
Next, Council Skies arrived on 2 June 2023 as the fourth studio album, and it peaked at number two in the UK. Foo Fighters beat it to number one in a close chart race that week.
Still, Council Skies topped the Official Vinyl Albums Chart, and it also topped the Official Record Store Chart. The result showed a loyal record buying audience, and it closed a strong solo run.
In addition, the single Easy Now arrived in January 2023 ahead of the album, and it set the tone for the record. The album title nodded to his Manchester roots, and the songs leaned back toward guitar led writing.
What the solo years mean for Live 27
For fans, the solo years answer one key question about Live 27 expectations. Noel Gallagher arrives at the reunion as a proven frontman, not only as a guitarist behind his brother.
Our Oasis lineup page covers who is confirmed for the tour, and the confirmed names stay narrow. Only Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher are confirmed by name for Live 27.
Above all, no solo song list can stand in for a Live 27 setlist, and this article invents none. Fans should wait for official news on the set, and they should treat online setlist claims with care.
In short, High Flying Birds kept Noel Gallagher writing, singing, and touring for over a decade. All 42 Live 27 shows sold out in the September 2026 ballot, and no general sale took place for the tour.
