The filmmakers behind Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger have answered the question fans keep asking. The documentary never shows how Liam and Noel Gallagher made up before their reunion shows. Director Dylan Southern says the scene does not exist because no heart-to-heart ever took place.

Southern spoke at a preview event for the streaming version at Abbey Road Studios in London on 5 October 2026. Writer and creator Steven Knight joined him, along with co-director Will Lovelace. The team gave fans a clear account of how the film took shape.

For context, viewers had pressed the filmmakers on the missing scene since the cinema release. Many fans expected a moment where the brothers buried the hatchet after their 2009 split.

Southern gave a simple answer: no heart-to-heart took place at all. He added that they walked back into a room together, filmed it, and started, and Oasis was back.

A deliberate choice, not a missing scene

Still, the absence of that scene was a choice, not an oversight. Southern said the team decided from the start to hold the brothers apart on screen. Liam and Noel do not appear in interviews together until towards the end of the film.

That delay shapes the whole viewing experience, since fans watch two separate stories for most of the running time, and the reunion lands late. Southern said the team held the joint interviews back on purpose.

Knight added a note about Noel’s early discomfort on stage. He said Noel first went out unable to look at the audience because the emotion hit him hard. Noel told the filmmakers he had to turn his back because he saw reunions happening all around him.

Meanwhile, Southern pointed to where the real change happened. He said the thaw between the brothers did not happen backstage or in rehearsals. It happened live on stage each night, and the brothers grew closer with every show.

Why the film puts fans at the centre

Above all, the filmmakers wanted the film to explain why the music moves people so deeply. Knight said fans grew emotional from the very start of each screening. He said the point of the film was to explore why songs written decades ago still feel personal to new listeners.

The team also put fan stories at the heart of the film. Knight said ticket demand overwhelmed Oasis when the reunion news landed. The demand came from original fans and from a whole new generation.

Southern gave the same idea a wider frame. He said everybody has family, everybody has friends, and everybody has fallen out with somebody. That shared experience makes Liam and Noel easy to recognise on screen, even for viewers who never saw the band live.

Lovelace added that the reunion tour itself surprised the band with its emotion. He said the shows carried more feeling than anyone expected when the band announced the run. The film tries to carry that same feeling to viewers at home.

Where to watch, and what comes next

Meanwhile, the streaming version arrived on Disney+ on 9 October 2026, after cinemas ran the film in September 2026. The longer cut adds unseen footage, including more of the joint interview and full performances. NME gave the cinema version four and a half stars, and called it masterfully done.

For fans, the film now works as a warm-up for next summer. All 42 Live β€˜27 shows sold out in the September 2026 ballot, and the tour opens in Glasgow on 21 May 2027. The Live β€˜27 setlist debate will run until then, and the Gallagher brothers page profiles the partnership at the heart of the film.

Meanwhile, Knight closed the Abbey Road event with a simple lesson from the project. He said making a film about real people humbled him as a fiction writer. Southern closed with a matching thought: kindness is a good thing, forgiveness is a good thing, and life is short.
